Why the Ram?
Borrego means Ram in Spanish. Sam’s family is very proud of their heritage. Her grandpa is one of 11 siblings, and they are “famous” in San Elizario, Texas due to their heavy involvement with the community and the fact that Alfonso Borrego Sr. and all of his sons served in the US military. The Borrego family used to own farm land in San Elizario and have both a street and a school named after the family. Sam’s cousin is into genealogy and has traced the family crest back to Spain/Portugal. Sam grew up hearing stories about her family through her grandpa Ramon Borrego and her grandma Mary Lou Borrego and feels an incredible sense of pride in her name. She also attended Colorado State University so she is truly a Ram through and through.
A ram is a confident and strong animal. Rams can go months without drinking water which makes them excellent at overcoming drought and difficult experiences. They are also skilled climbers and can climb mountains with only 2 inch ledges for their hooves. Rams are a great metaphor of resilience, determination, and perseverance which are words Sam would use to describe herself.
